Title ideas:David and Jonathan. David and Jonathan were good/loyal friends

King Saul sent soldiers to David’s house to kill him, so he fled to the town where the prophet Samuel lived. But Saul learned where David was staying, and sent soldiers there, too.

David and Jonathan had become very good friends, so David went to ask for help from Jonathan. But Jonathan did not believe that King Saul wanted to harm David.

So David explained that King Saul had tried to kill him and was still planning to do so.

Then David and Jonathan made a plan. Jonathan would go attend a feast the next two days, where he would sit near King Saul.

At the feast, Jonathan sat facing King Saul, but David was not there. David was hiding in a nearby field, waiting for a message from Jonathan. But King Saul said nothing about David.

Next night at the feast, King Saul asked Jonathan, “Why has David not come to the feast, neither yesterday nor today?”

So Jonathan lied, saying, “David asked my permission for him to go offer a sacrifice [to the Lord] with his brothers at their father’s house! So I let him go!”

Saul became angry and said, “As long as David is alive, you cannot become king after I die. David is not a true friend, and he must die!” So Jonathan asked, “Why must David die? He has done nothing wrong!”

These words made King Saul so angry, that he threw his spear at his son Jonathan! So Jonathan now knew that his father was planning to kill David.

Next day, Jonathan went out to the field where David was hiding. He had with him a young boy who would gather up any arrows that Jonathan might shoot.

Jonathan shot some arrows beyond where the boy was standing. He then shouted, “The arrows fell beyond you! Run! Find the arrows and bring them to me!”

The boy did not know that David was hiding nearby. But when David heard the word Run, he knew that he must run far from King Saul.

The boy found the arrows and brought them to Jonathan. Jonathan then said to him, “Carry this bow and these arrows to my house in town, while I stay here!”

After the boy was gone, David and Jonathan ran to meet each other. David [knelt / bowed] before Jonathan as one would [kneel / bow] before a king.

Both men felt so sad, that they wept, David more than Jonathan. They [embraced / hugged] and said good-bye.

Jonathan blessed David, saying, “The Lord is with you, David! You and I will always keep our promise to each other, and we shall do so with each other’s children!” David agreed, then turned and left. Jonathan, too, turned and went back to King Saul.
